Partnering with Orb to Transform Revenue Workflows in an AI-First Software World

With the announcement of Orb’s $25 million Series B round led by us, I am thrilled to welcome Alvaro Morales, Kshitij Grover, and the rest of the Orb team to the Mayfield Family. AI may be the largest value creation opportunity in our lifetimes. We at Mayfield believe Orb is providing the billing infrastructure for that value capture, powering revenue workflows for the next generation of AI and software companies. Since the beginning of 2024, the company has tripled its customer base, and added industry-leading companies like Vercel, Pinecone, and Perplexity as customers. 

The massive tailwind of generative AI and smarter, more personalized products are shifting software pricing from per-seat models to usage, hybrid, or outcome-based pricing.  As a result, businesses using outdated billing systems struggle to align pricing with the value they deliver and must redirect engineering efforts toward monetization instead of product innovation. This leaves them at a disadvantage, especially as economic pressures drive customers to focus on software that delivers the most impact.

Orb’s next-gen billing infrastructure unifies billing and data in a single platform, empowering companies to evolve their pricing as quickly as they innovate their products. Pricing changes affect everything —revenue recognition, financial forecasting, and sales compensation. Orb serves as the single source of truth for all teams, enabling the whole revenue workflow across metering, billing, invoicing, and reporting. Engineering teams can get back to building instead of tackling billing issues.

Alvaro and Kshitij worked together as engineering leaders at Asana, and identified the opportunity in billing infrastructure during a major pricing and packaging shift at the company. As people-first investors, we quickly recognized that scaling software platforms and aligning monetization with evolving product capabilities are core to the team’s DNA. Orb is central to our broader Cognition-as-a-Service thesis, powering the cognitive plumbing layer (middleware, data, models, cognitive cloud infrastructure), and the applications and AI teammates utilizing the AI stack. We’re excited to partner with them to empower every business with the billing infrastructure they need in the AI-first era to reach their full revenue potential.
